SUMMARY:Mercantile Mobility: Chinese Merchants in Western Canada Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Mercantile Mobility: Chinese Merchants in Western Canada\n\nCurated by U of A alumna Helen Kwan Yee Cheung\, this exhibition takes us on a journey through time\, from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century\, to explore what happened to Chinese immigrant workers after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway\, which they helped to build. The curator presents a new perspective on the history and contributions of Chinese immigrants in Canada by profiling those workers who started from the ground up to become merchants and considering how they progressed from mere survival to becoming successful as entrepreneurs. This exhibition examines the distinctive socio-economic landscape where this dynamic group carved out their own niche and quietly propelled the Canadian economy; it reveals how they helped to build communities through movements of products at the municipal\, provincial\, and global levels.  Their business ventures are explored through rare archival documents and images collected over a decade by the curator through a community-based process and through the ongoing acquisition efforts of Bruce Peel Special Collections. \nThe website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this exhibition as well as information about research collections and Peel Workshops. \n\n\nDate:\nMay 24\, 2023 to March 29\, 2024\nTime:\nWednesdays\, Thursday\, and Fridays from 1:00pm – 4:00pm\nLocation:\nBruce Peel Special Collections\nB7\, Rutherford South Library\, University of Alberta\nT6G 2J4\nhttps://bpsc.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/mercantile-mobility\n\nAudience:\n   All Audiences \nCategories:\n   Exhibits \nContact: 780-492-5998\nEmail: bpsc@ualberta.ca

SUMMARY:Goji Berries Tearoom 杞子茶屋 Fridays
DESCRIPTION:Visit Reeds Bazaar on 1905 Street and learn about Chinese history and specifically the significance of goji berries in Edmonton. The 杞子茶屋 Goji Berries Tearoom exhibition runs August 3rd – September 17th\, 2023 at Fort Edmonton Park. \nGoji berries were brought to Edmonton by the first Chinese workers after the completion of the railway in the late 19th Century. Over the past three years\, artist Yong Fei Guan has examined some of the untold histories through the lens of local gojis and their human companion. Her team has donated over 300 baby goji plants to the public\, including the new Chinese Garden at Fort Edmonton Park located on 1905 Street. A tea conversation with the artist will be held once a week at Reeds Bazaar\, where we will reflect on our own idea of “home” in the time of mass migration. \nJoin Guan at Reeds Bazaar on Fridays from 10:30 am to 12 pm.
