DESCRIPTION:Join us in solidarity for the 2022 National Day of Action Against Anti-Asian Racism where we will rally to stand up to racism and racially-motivated hate\, in all forms\, which is prevalent and impacts all racialized communities. This is an important event as Asian communities all over the world have been deeply impacted by the significant surge of anti-Asian racism in the last few years. \nWe will gather at 11:30am at the City Hall front steps. At 12:00pm\, Councillor Anne Stevenson for Ward O-day’min will officially proclaim May 10 as the National Day of Action Against Anti-Asian Racism on behalf of Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. At 12:30pm the group will then walk to Pacific Rim Mall at 10512-97 Street\, where there will be an open mic for members of the community to share experiences and impacts of racism\, hate and discrimination. The program will end around 1:45pm to 2:00pm. There will be designated volunteers on site to ensure participant safety and to help as required during the walk

SUMMARY:Dragons on the Tibetan Plateau - Virtual Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Silk was one of the most important representative commodities in the cultural exchange between Tibet and China during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Chinese emperors often gifted silk to foreign ambassadors and visitors to help build the diplomatic relationships with other territories.  \n Tibetan aristocrats such as the Dalai Lama\, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people\, and other ambassadors to and from Tibet highly valued the Chinese dragon-patterned silk and sought it as gifts when offering tributes or trading with China. The symbols and figures on the silk represented prominent Buddhist ideas and also the political power of the Ming and Qing empires. The variations of the dragon pattern found on chubas\, Tibetan robes\, as either gifts or commodities demonstrates some of the regulations of the Chinese imperial court.  \n Tibetan textiles in Dragons on the Tibetan Plateau include robes and textiles made of Chinese silks and decorated with variations on Chinese dragon patterns. The textiles in this exhibition feature dragons with claws\, horns\, tails\, and in a variety of colours\, and they were produced using different weaving and embroidery techniques.  \n All textiles featured in this exhibition are from the University of Alberta Museums’ Mactaggart Art Collection. Edmonton philanthropists Drs. Sandy and Cécile Mactaggart\, generously began donating their collection to the University of Alberta in 2005. DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Chinese Studies at Concordia University of Edmonton is excited to announce that registration for the Chinese Bridge On-Line Winter Camp for Canadian Students is now open! \nThe Chinese Language and Culture Online Winter Camp is specially designed for Canadian students. It aims to enhance the students’ understanding of China\, Chinese language\, and Chinese culture with an embedded sports theme. This Winter Camp is sponsored by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) and in collaboration with CUE’s partner university in Shanghai\, China — Donghua University. All instructors and language buddies are from Donghua University\, China. In recognition of Philippine Heritage Month\, we feature Karina Zapata\, a promising young journalist born and raised in Calgary and recipient of a 2021 Joan Donaldson CBC News Scholarship.\n\n\nKarina will share her story of how she fulfills her passion for helping people feel heard – while simultaneously learning more about herself – through her career as a journalist. Committed to making an impact through her work\, Karina has reported on topics like heritage language loss\, decolonizing mental health\, the lack of clean water in Indigenous communities\, and more. Most recently\, she wrote an article about skin lightening in the Filipino community\, and in the process\, learned more about her Filipino identity. Karina will give us insight into her life-long goal of helping the public understand the lived experiences of underrepresented communities through empathy\, connection\, and the power of words. \nKarina’s Bio \nKarina Zapata\, born and raised in Calgary is a journalist who is passionate about telling in-depth\, seldom told truths. Karina grew up with a strong love of words and her nose always in a book. When she realized that words can transform lives\, she pursued her Bachelor of Communication with a major in Journalism and a minor in Social Innovation at Mount Royal University. She is currently a 2021 Joan Donaldson CBC News Scholar\, where she gets to share the stories of people across the country. Prior to her scholarship with the CBC\, Karina worked on award-winning investigative projects with the Institute for Investigative Journalism\, such as Tainted H2O and Broken Promises. She also co-produced a multimedia website\, Bad Blood\, which explores Canada’s blood donation restrictions against men who have sex with men. The project won the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Student Award of Excellence\, as well as second place at the ACP Pacemaker Awards for 2020 Multimedia Story of the Year. In her spare time\, she runs Femme Handbook\, a magazine she co-founded that is dedicated to empowering women through creative content. \nRegister in Advance

DESCRIPTION:n March 2021\, the Chinese Canadian National Council reported 1\,150 instances of anti-Asian racism in Canada in the previous 12 months\, noting that misinformation and racist beliefs related to the pandemic contributed to this surge. The horrific act of violence\, in which eight people were killed by a gunman in Georgia\, six of which were Asian American women\, is tied to sexism and fetishization that Asian women in particular are subjected to. \nJoin us for this important discussion as we listen to guest speakers share their perspectives on #StopAsianHate in Canada. \nPanelists: \n\nSandra SG Wong (she/her) writes fiction across genres\, including the cross-genre Lola Starke novels and Crescent City short stories. She has been a finalist for the Arthur Ellis Awards for Excellence in Canadian Crime Writing (Best First Novel and Best Short Story) and longlisted for the Whistler Independent Book Awards (Best Crime Fiction). She currently serves as National President of Sisters in Crime\, a U.S.-based non-profit dedicated to equity in the crime writing community.\nLinda Hoang is one of Alberta’s leading social media strategists. She is a popular blogger and social media content creator\, an ethical influencer and passionate entrepreneur.
