SUMMARY:Dragons on the Tibetan Plateau - Virtual Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Silk was one of the most important representative commodities in the cultural exchange between Tibet and China during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Chinese emperors often gifted silk to foreign ambassadors and visitors to help build the diplomatic relationships with other territories. \n Tibetan aristocrats such as the Dalai Lama\, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people\, and other ambassadors to and from Tibet highly valued the Chinese dragon-patterned silk and sought it as gifts when offering tributes or trading with China. The symbols and figures on the silk represented prominent Buddhist ideas and also the political power of the Ming and Qing empires. The variations of the dragon pattern found on chubas\, Tibetan robes\, as either gifts or commodities demonstrates some of the regulations of the Chinese imperial court. \n Tibetan textiles in Dragons on the Tibetan Plateau include robes and textiles made of Chinese silks and decorated with variations on Chinese dragon patterns. The textiles in this exhibition feature dragons with claws\, horns\, tails\, and in a variety of colours\, and they were produced using different weaving and embroidery techniques. \n All textiles featured in this exhibition are from the University of Alberta Museums’ Mactaggart Art Collection. Edmonton philanthropists Drs. Sandy and Cécile Mactaggart\, generously began donating their collection to the University of Alberta in 2005. The Mactaggart Art Collection contains more than 1\,000 works of art\, textiles\, handscrolls\, albums\, and more from ancient and modern East Asia. \nhttps://www.ualberta.ca/museums/visit-explore/exhibitions/online-exhibitions/vrdragonsonthetibetanplateau.html \n\n\nAudio Tour Transcripts\n\nWelcome to Dragons on the Tibetan Plateau [PDF] \nVariations on the Dragon Pattern – 1 [PDF] \nVariations on the Dragon Pattern – 2 [PDF] \nRegulating Costumes During the Qing Dynasty – 1 [PDF] \nRegulating Costumes During the Qing Dynasty – 4 [PDF] \nMaking the Dragon: Pattern Making Techniques – 1 [PDF] \nMaking the Dragon: Pattern Making Techniques – 2 [PDF] \nConclusion and Tibet Textile Imports and Trades with China [PDF]

SUMMARY:Riverdale Book Club Discussion: Why Grow Here
DESCRIPTION:Next Riverdale Book Club May 27\, 7:30pm \nNew people welcome! This month\, we are reading a book by local author Kathryn Chase Merrett—AND she will join us for our discussion! Her book is Why Grow Here: Essays on Edmonton’s Gardening History. “Vacant lot gardeners\, rose gardeners\, and horticultural societies have all contributed to the beautification of the capital city of Alberta\, and through the enthusiasm of florists\, seedsmen\, and plant breeders the city has developed a distinct horticultural character. In this collection of nine essays\, each with a different theme\, Kathryn Chase Merrett depicts the development of Edmonton’s social\, cultural\, and physical landscape as it has been shaped by champions of both nature and the garden.” (www.uap.ualberta.ca/titles/311–9781772120486–why–grow–here) — \nA perfect read for the spring\, especially if you are interested in gardening\, local history\, or urban design.
