SUMMARY:"Living Book" Karina Zapata - Zoom Webinar
DESCRIPTION:LIVING BOOK is a series featuring stories and conversations on aspects of the lives of Filipino-Canadians. In recognition of Philippine Heritage Month\, we feature Karina Zapata\, a promising young journalist born and raised in Calgary and recipient of a 2021 Joan Donaldson CBC News Scholarship.\n\n\nKarina will share her story of how she fulfills her passion for helping people feel heard – while simultaneously learning more about herself – through her career as a journalist. Committed to making an impact through her work\, Karina has reported on topics like heritage language loss\, decolonizing mental health\, the lack of clean water in Indigenous communities\, and more. Most recently\, she wrote an article about skin lightening in the Filipino community\, and in the process\, learned more about her Filipino identity. Karina will give us insight into her life-long goal of helping the public understand the lived experiences of underrepresented communities through empathy\, connection\, and the power of words. \nKarina’s Bio \nKarina Zapata\, born and raised in Calgary is a journalist who is passionate about telling in-depth\, seldom told truths. Karina grew up with a strong love of words and her nose always in a book. When she realized that words can transform lives\, she pursued her Bachelor of Communication with a major in Journalism and a minor in Social Innovation at Mount Royal University. She is currently a 2021 Joan Donaldson CBC News Scholar\, where she gets to share the stories of people across the country. Prior to her scholarship with the CBC\, Karina worked on award-winning investigative projects with the Institute for Investigative Journalism\, such as Tainted H2O and Broken Promises. She also co-produced a multimedia website\, Bad Blood\, which explores Canada’s blood donation restrictions against men who have sex with men. The project won the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Student Award of Excellence\, as well as second place at the ACP Pacemaker Awards for 2020 Multimedia Story of the Year. In her spare time\, she runs Femme Handbook\, a magazine she co-founded that is dedicated to empowering women through creative content. \nRegister in Advance

SUMMARY:Work of the Week Celebrates Asian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Alberta Foundation of the Arts \nFor this week’s Work of the Week\, we are highlighting a few of the diverse artworks in our collection by Canadians of Asian descent\, because May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada! \nAsian Heritage Month is a time to learn about and celebrate the many contributions of Canadians of Asian descent\, who have done so much to make our country an amazing place to live. Immigrants to Canada from East Asia\, Southern Asia\, Western\, Central and Southeast Asia have brought with them a rich cultural history\, including diverse languages\, art\, religions and traditions. \nThis year’s Asian Heritage Month comes at a time when Canadians of Asian descent have been facing an increase in anti-Asian hate and violence. That’s why it’s important to take this time to acknowledge and appreciate the achievements of Asian-Canadians and to stand together against all forms of anti-Asian racism. \nPlease enjoy these artworks by Chin Shek Lam\, Diana Un-Jin Cho and Do-Hee Sung. \nhttps://www.affta.ab.ca/news/work-week-celebrates-asian-heritage-month \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening – Center Stage (2019)
DESCRIPTION:International superstar Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love) embodies tragic screen siren Ruan Lingyu\, known as the “Greta Garbo of China\,” in this unconventional biopic by Hong Kong New Wave master Stanley Kwan (Rouge). Praised for her moving and emotive onscreen presence\, Ruan’s private life\, which was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids\, began to mirror the melodramas which brought her fame\, culminating in her suicide at age 24. \nKwan and Cheung paint a kaleidoscopic yet intimate portrait of the ill-fated actress\, deftly blending lush period drama\, archival footage\, and metatextual documentary sequences of Cheung reflecting on Ruan’s legacy. The result is\, much like the films of Ruan Lingyu themselves\, “tender\, vivid and almost overwhelmingly moving” (Time Out). \nHong Kong 1991\, 154 min\, Dir: Stanley Kwan\nCantonese\, Mandarin\, & English with subtitles

SUMMARY:Dongzhi - Winter Solstice Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese Benevolent Association and Chinese Community organizations are excited to announce the upcoming Winter Solstice Festival to celebrate Dongzhi from Edmonton’s Chinatown. It is an online event with a short launch of the Festival on December 12th and will run through the weeks leading up to the actual date of Winter Solstice this year\, December 21st. Join us online between December 12th to December 21st as we present a variety of arts and crafts\, tongyuan and dumpling making demonstrations\, educational talks on Dongzhi\, and cultural performances. For program schedules and details\, please go to WinterSolsticeYEG.ca.\n\n冬至  Dongzhi (Mandarin) or Dongzi (Cantonese) means “winter’s peak / arrival of winter / extreme of winter”.  過冬至節 (Cantonese) or 过冬至节 (Mandarin) is Winter Solstice Festival in English. Celebration of winter solstice is centuries old and arose out of the tradition of people preparing for colder months ahead on the day of winter solstice. Winter Solstice Festival is celebrated on the shortest day\, or the longest night of the year.\n\nAnother exciting feature of the Festival is a Winter Solstice Photo Contest. We invite you to send us your best photo of your homemade or home-cooked tongyuan and/or dumplings by you and/or your family for a chance to win wonderful prizes sponsored by Edmonton Chinatown businesses. Visit WinterSolsticeYEG.ca to complete an entry form for a chance to win! \n \nFeel free to help us to promote the Winter Solstice Festival as broadly as possible.\n \nLet’s celebrate Dongzhi (Winter Solstice) together while being apart!
