SUMMARY:Chinatown Dining Week
DESCRIPTION:Even more exciting\, we’ve doubled our participating businesses from last year\, with 9 new establishments joining us for a total of 16! As in the past\, Chinatown Dining Week will highlight some of the diverse cuisines available in the neighbourhood – including regional Chinese specialties\, Filipino\, Indian\, and Thai. \nIn addition to businesses located in commercial Chinatown clustered around 97 Street\, we’ve also added two restaurants situated in so-called “Chinatown South”\, or the area just east of Canada Place. Those who attended our summer walking tours in previous years will know that Edmonton actually boasts two Chinatowns\, and though the Quarters is now largely home to cultural and family associations\, some retail and hospitality hidden gems remain. \nParticipating restaurants have put together special $18 fixed price dinner menus that will be offered after 5pm from January 9 – 19\, 2020. Each menu will feature two courses. Participating restaurants include (*denotes new participant): \n\n*All Happy Family\, 10013 106 Avenue\nAsian Express Hot Pot\, 10586 100 Street\nGui Lin Noodle House\, 10626 97 Street\nKanto 98 St. Eatery\, 10636 98 Street\nKing Noodle House Pho Hoang\, 10613 97 Street\n*Liuyishou Hot Pot\, #168\, 9700 105 Avenue (Pacific Rim Mall)\nNamaste India\, 10023 107 Avenue\n*Noi Thai\, 10724 95 Street\nPadmanadi\, 10740 101 Street\n*Shijing Taste Mixer\, #127\, 9700 105 Avenue (Pacific Rim Mall)\n*Syphay\, 9441 Jasper Avenue\n*Youth BBQ\, 9645 101A Avenue\n\nThis year\, we’ve also added a new category that now enables Chinatown Dining Week to feature other types of businesses that may not focus on the sit-down experience. These establishments will offer $10 takeaway packages that will be available during regular business hours from January 9-19\, 2020. Participating businesses include (*denotes new participant): \n\n*Hong Kong Bakery\, 10649 97 Street\n*Macarons & Goodies\, 10548 101 Street\n*Shan Shan Bakery\, 10552 97 Street\nTea Bar Cafe\, 10640 98 Street\n\nMenus will be released at edmontonchinatown.ca the week of December 16\, 2019 – check back then for more details!

SUMMARY:Starfest - St. Albert Readers Festival: Winnie Yeung & Abu Bakr al Rabeeah
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Winnie Yeung & Abu Bakr al Rabeeah\,  authors of Homes: A Refugee Story \n\nFinalist for the 2018 Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Politcal Writing. Audience choice winner of Canada Reads \nIn 2010\, the al Rabeeah family left their home in Iraq in hope of a safer life. They moved to Homs\, in Syria – just before the Syrian civil war broke out. \nAbu Bakr\, one of eight children\, was ten years old when the violence began on the streets around him: car bombings\, attacks on his mosque and school\, firebombs late at night. Homes tells of the strange juxtapositions of growing up in a war zone: horrific\, unimaginable events punctuated by normalcy – soccer\, cousins\, video games\, friends. \nHomes is the remarkable true story of how a young boy emerged from a war zone with a passion for sharing his story and telling the world what is truly happening in Syria. As told to her by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah\, writer Winnie Yeung has crafted a heartbreaking\, hopeful\, and urgently necessary book that provides a window into understanding Syria.

SUMMARY:Starfest - St. Albert Readers Festival: Ann Hui with Marty Chan
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, Globe and Mail reporter Ann Hui drove across Canada to write about small-town Chinese restaurants and the families who run them. Using her own family’s story as a touchstone\, she explores the importance of these restaurants in the country’s history and makes the case for why chop suey cuisine should be recognized as quintessentially Canadian. Ann Hui will be in conversation with Marty Chan. \nChop Suey Nation weaves together Hui’s own family history – from her grandfather’s decision to leave behind a wife and newborn son for a new life\, to her father’s path from cooking in rural China to running some of the largest “Western” kitchens in Vancouver\, to the unravelling of a closely guarded family secret – with the stories of dozens of Chinese restaurant owners from coast to coast. \nAlong her trip\, she meets a Chinese-restaurant owner/small-town mayor\, the owner of a Chinese restaurant in a Thunder Bay curling rink\, and the woman who runs a restaurant alone on the remote Fogo Island. Hui also explores the fascinating history behind “chop suey” cuisine\, detailing the invention of classics like “ginger beef” and “Newfoundland chow mein\,” and other uniquely Canadian fare like the “Chinese pierogies” of Alberta. \nMarty Chan loves to write. Before he became a kids’ author\, he worked in theatre\, radio\, and television. Now his passion is inspiring the next generation of lifelong readers and writers. Using a combination of storytelling\, improv\, humour\, and stage magic\, he shares his love of words with audiences young and old.
