SUMMARY:Canada and China in 21st Century: Partnership or Conflict?
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s diplomatic engagement with the People’s Republic of China will reach the 50 year mark next year.  The period since China’s economic reform began in 1978 under Deng Xiaoping has seen a steady expansion of economic linkages between Canada and China\, notably Chinese investment in Alberta – $50 billion.  Immigration\, tourism\, and cultural exchanges have all flourished. But the detention of a senior Huawei executive on an extradition warrant in Vancouver\, followed by the detention of two Canadian citizens in China\, who are accused of endangering China’s national security\, has generated a diplomatic crisis between the two states. \nHas the damage from these recent events permanently damaged our relationship with China? What are the prospects for Canada-China relations in the 21st century? Professor Houlden will give his insights on these questions in his talk. \nProfessor Houlden joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1976\, serving in Ottawa and abroad. Twenty-two of his years in the Canadian Foreign Service were spent working on Chinese economic\, trade and political affairs for the Government of Canada including five postings in China. He also served at Canadian Embassies in Havana and Warsaw\, and at the Canada National Defence College. His last assignment before joining the University of Alberta in 2008 was as Director General of the East Asian Bureau of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade\, responsible for Greater China\, Japan\, the Koreas and Mongolia \n3:30pm-5:00pm  \nWednesday\, February 27th\, 2019 \nAuditorium Room 150\, Telus International Centre \n 11104 87 Ave NW\, Edmonton  \nUniversity of Alberta Main Campus \nRSVP required

SUMMARY:Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, Academy Award-winning film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement at the age of 72.  He couldn’t shake his burning desire to create however\, and after an encounter with young CGI animators\, Miyazaki embarked on a new project to utilize CGI for the first time ever. But the artist\, who has been adamant about hand-drawn animation\, confronted many challenges that threaten to cancel the film. Can an old master who thinks he’s past his prime shine once again? \nJapan 2016\, 70 min\, Dir: Kaku Arakawa\nJapanese with subtitles

SUMMARY:Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremonies
DESCRIPTION:Experience Japanese culture in a unique setting. Traditional tea ceremonies are offered in the tranquil Kurimoto Japanese Garden. Depending on weather and the size of the group\, tea ceremonies take place either in the Ozawa Pavilion tea house\, or in the Ikoi no ba\, a charming adjoining structure. Dressed in beautiful kimono\, members of the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association (Wind in the Pines Tea Association)\, prepare and serve the tea. Guests enjoy matcha tea\, Japanese sweets\, and an explanation of the customs that are part of the ceremony. \nThe Matsukaze Chanoyu Association is a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the traditions of the Japanese tea ceremony. \nNote: Tea offering tickets and seating times will be posted after March 15\, 2019. \nTicket information:\nTickets are $10 for a seated indoor tea ceremony\, and are paid directly to the volunteer group (cash only). The ticket price helps to offset the cost of imported tea and sweets. This is for tea tickets only – admission to the Garden is extra and gets paid at the Gate. \nTickets may be purchased in advance through the Matsukaze Chonoyu Association’s website https://www.matsukazetea.org/ \nTickets are available online up until the day before the tea service\, or until they sell out. Tea ceremonies usually sells out so we strongly recommend that tickets be purchased well in advance. \nParticipants should allow enough time be at the tea ceremony location 10-15 minutes before their sitting time\, to take part in an information session. \nRegular admission applies\, plus additional $10 for tea ceremony.\nSeason Pass holders and Friends of the Garden Members get free admission to the Garden.\nCost for tea ceremony is paid directly to the Matsukaze Tea Group online. \nAdvance ticket purchase strongly recommended.

SUMMARY:Figure 一二三六八 | 展覽 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Figure 一\, 二\, 三\, 六\, 八 is a heritage art project honouring the history and cultural impacts of Edmonton’s ever-changing Chinatown. Recognized for over 100 years\, Chinatown has relocated\, transformed\, and adapted itself through urban economic pressures. However\, many residents know little about its histories. As the Chinese community today struggles to maintain their legacy in the area\, redevelopment plans continue to alter and challenge the space. The removal and undecided home of Edmonton’s Harbin Gate is a recent example of how infrastructure plans can have a debilitating effect on communities. \nIn late 2017\, the Living Local Grant supported a team of local heritage experts\, community advocates\, artists\, and community organization (ASSIST Community Services Centre) to form. Since then\, this group has been creating five “figures” of artwork centered around Chinatown history and life. This work is influenced by social practice artists like Theaster Gates (Rebuild Foundation\, Chicago) and Rick Lowe (Project Row Houses\, Houston) who have revitalized neighbourhood ghettos into open community spaces. The project’s methodology emphasizes active engagement\, participation\, and collaboration with the community. \nCore Team Cui Jinzhe\, Lan Chan-Marples\, Chris Chang-Yen Phillips\, and Shawn Tse \nGrants Edmonton Heritage Council Living Local Grant\, Access Copyright Foundation Marian Hebb Research Grant. \nCommunity Partners ASSIST Community Services Centre (Lead)\, Chinese Benevolent Association\, City of Edmonton\, CJSR Radio\, Dr. Steven Aung\, Edmonton Chinatown Chinese Library\, Edmonton Chinese Young Leaders Council\, Fallout Media\, U of A Community Service Learning. \nResources Provincial Archives of Alberta\, Bruce Peel Special Collections Library\, City of Edmonton Archives.
