SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Chopsticks: An Edmonton Chinatown Food Crawl
DESCRIPTION:We are “crawling” into Chinatown on August 2nd (Thu)\, 2018!\nTickets are live until July 29th.\n \nPresented by the McCauley Revitalization\, we are going to bring participants in a staggered eating process in one night by having one course of a meal at each of the four eateries. The goal of the Chinatown Food Crawl project is to provide exposure to the local Asian restaurants and to also showcase the Chinatown area as a safe and viable area to enjoy. \nAs a participant\, you are going to walk in a group between restaurants\, and will stop for approx. 30 minutes at each of the locations. DESCRIPTION:Sitting times:\n1:15 am – Ozawa Pavilion\n12:45 pm\, 1:30 pm and 2:15 pm – Ikoi no ba \nExperience Japanese culture in a unique setting. Traditional tea offerings are hosted at the Ozawa Pavilion\, an authentic Japanese Tea House\, or in the adjacent Ikoi no ba (a “cozy place to gather”)\, both overlooking the tranquil Kurimoto Japanese Garden. Japanese sweets and tea are provided to guests\, as well as an explanation of the tea ceremony. \nAdvance ticket purchase is recommended for this popular event.  \nTicket information\nThe tea ceremony is presented by the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association (Wind in the Pines Tea Association)\, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Japanese tea offering. Tickets are paid directly to the volunteer group (cash only at the door\, or online at the Matsukaze Chonoyu Association website in advance). The ticket price helps to offset the cost of imported tea and sweets. DESCRIPTION:On June 6\, 2018\, Dashan (aka Mark Rowswell) will be in Edmonton to receive a Honorary Doctorate of Letters –the highest honour conferred by the University of Alberta. \nIn addition to Dashan Live\, the China Institute and University of Alberta International will host a one-on-one English interview with Dashan on June 7\, 2018. The dialogue will feature Dashan’s personal story\, and some Q&A. Famed for his proficiency in Mandarin and his mastery of the traditional comedic dialogue known as xiangsheng (“cross talk”)—he is a household name to more than a billion people in China—he has used his public profile to advocate for public health and social causes. He served as Canadian team attaché for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and as Commissioner General for Canada at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai\, was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2006 and was named Canada’s Goodwill Ambassador to China in 2012.

DESCRIPTION:  \nIn partnership with the Edmonton Poetry Festival. \nJoin Jan Zwicky for a three-hour workshop focussing on the musical aspects of poetic language. The workshop aims to heighten awareness of rhythm and sound through close readings of sample poems by established authors and through exercises that participants can take home.
