SUMMARY:Japanese Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:University of Alberta Botanic Garden \nSitting times TBA. \nExperience Japanese culture in a unique setting. Traditional tea offerings are hosted at the Ozawa Pavilion\, an authentic Japanese Tea House\, or in the adjacent Ikoi no ba (a “cozy place to gather”)\, both overlooking the tranquil Kurimoto Japanese Garden. Japanese sweets and tea are provided to guests\, as well as an explanation of the tea ceremony. \nFree guided tours of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden will also be offered several times on this date – a wonderful opportunity to learn about the fascinating history and symbolism behind this special garden. \nAdvance ticket purchase is recommended for this popular event. \nTicket information\nThe tea ceremony is presented by the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association (Wind in the Pines Tea Association)\, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Japanese tea offering. Tickets are paid directly to the volunteer group (cash only at the door\, or online at the Matsukaze Chonoyu Association website in advance). The ticket price helps to offset the cost of imported tea and sweets. Tea tickets $7.50/each (does not include admission to the Garden). \nPasses and coupons are eligible for admission to the Garden for this event; extra charge for tea ceremony tickets. \nFor information email uabg.events@ualberta.ca or call 780-492-3138

SUMMARY:Kristina Wong
DESCRIPTION:Performer\, writer\, cultural commentator and “eco-comedian”\n7:00 – 9:00 pm\nGarneau Theatre 8712 109 Street\nTickets: $10 (FREE drink included) \n“The Wong Street Journal”\nHalf psychedelic TED lecture and half hip-hop extravaganza\, “The Wong Street Journal” breaks down the complexities of global poverty and economic theory using uneasy-to-read charts\, never-before-proven economic strategies for survival and slideshows of hustlers from the first and third world. This solo theatre work illustrates the intersecting politics of charity and economic development across the globe. \nKristina Wong was recently featured in the New York Times’ Off Color series “highlighting artists of colour who use humour to make smart social statements about the sometimes subtle\, sometimes obvious ways that race plays out in America today.” She is a performance artist\, comedian and writer who has created five solo shows and one ensemble play and has toured throughout the United States and U.K. Kristina has been praised by the LA Times for her “stereotype skewering humour”\, and by Bitch magazine for her “politically charged art with unapologetic humour”. She spent a month in Northern Uganda researching “The Wong Street Journal” and recording “Mzungu Price”\, a rap album with local rappers. The show debuted to rave reviews\, including the following from the San Francisco Chronicle: “Fiercely comic… the kind of politically focused theatre that not only makes you think and question your own preconceptions but also have a great time doing it.”

SUMMARY:Empire of the Son
DESCRIPTION:Empire of the Son\nTwo Generations And The Silence Between Them\nThrough a series of audio interviews\, playwright Tetsuro Shigematsu discovers vast worlds contained within his emotionally remote father – from the ashes of World War II and Hiroshima to swinging London in the 1960s and work in broadcasting at the BBC. As the playwright learns about how his own father was once a son\, he realizes all the ways in which he himself needs to step up and become a better dad. This funny\, poignant story of one immigrant family and their intergenerational conflicts reminds us that no matter how far we journey out into the world to find ourselves – across decades and continents – we never stop being our parents’ children. \nWritten and performed by TETSURO SHIGEMATSU*\nDirected by RICHARD WOLFE*\n\nA Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre production \nTickets: http://www.citadeltheatre.com/2017-2018/empire-of-the-son#tickets \n
