DESCRIPTION:Dough Art 捏面人 was a popular street scene in cities in China before the 1940s. This way of making a living was still seen In Hong Kong in the early 1960s. It is amazing to watch the artist take a combination of colourful cooked dough and turned it into vivid animals\, opera characters\, heros etc. The faces of children watching or buying them were full of wonder and so priceless. On December 3\, a teacher from the Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) will teach children how to create interesting dough animals. Participants will be able to take home their creations!

SUMMARY:Chinese Paper Cut Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Paper Cutting 剪纸艺术 is a folk art in China. It is a common practice in villages especially for decorating homes for hundreds of years. With a pair of scissors and coloured paper participants will learn some basic techniques of paper cutting. It is fun and beautiful. The workshop will be conducted by a teacher from the Confucius Institute in Edmonton with the assistance of a few volunteers.

DESCRIPTION:The Chinese Benevolent Association is pleased to present the 4th Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival at City Hall Square with the Edmonton Chinese Community Organizations. \nThe Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival is the second most important holiday in the Chinese culture. It is always celebrated on August 15th in the Chinese calendar and in September or early October in the western calendar. The holiday celebration includes brightly lit lanterns\, mooncakes\, moon stories\, and families being together. Families go to public places/parks to stroll around and admire the colourful lanterns around them. They give thanks and pray for good health\, prosperity\, and success of family members to the full moon. Mid-Autumn festival is popularly celebrated among Asian countries. \nThe Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival fast becoming a popular City of Edmonton fall cultural event. We anticipate over 5000 people attending. In mid-autumn festival tradition\, there will be performances\, lantern-making\, lantern riddles\, calligraphy\, storytelling\, moon gazing\, lantern admiring\, and even making a wish and watching it float around in the City Hall’s pool\, and much more. To celebrate our anniversary\, we’re holding a banquet at the Chateau Lacombe. \nDinner will be served buffet-style and there will be entertainment\, a history on the Mah Society\, and door prizes to be won. \nTickets are $65 a person and we encourage people to purchase tables (rounds of eight) if you can. Come along for a walk to learn about Chinatown’s past\, present\, and future. We’ll touch on the history of Edmonton’s two Chinatowns\, current development pressures\, and visit a few of the businesses on and off 97th Street. \nThis free tour runs from 10:30am-12:30pm every second Sunday this summer on June 11\, July 9\, August 13\, and September 10. \nMeet at the Edmonton Tourism Welcome Centre at 9990 Jasper Avenue. Look for guides wearing “I ♥ Chinatown” t-shirts. \nThis is a volunteer-run tour\, for the love of Chinatown!
