DESCRIPTION:Local children will have many opportunities to meet the celebrated author\, who will be visiting all the library branches in Edmonton as well as libraries in Leduc\, Stony Plain\, Tofield and Vegreville. \nDuring a session called “Myth and Magic” he’ll mix Asian folktales with magic tricks and improvisation. He even took a cartooning class so he could learn how to illustrate his stories live. \nChan’s efforts are part of a nationwide campaign to get kids reading over the summer. DESCRIPTION:July 4 @ 9:00 am – July 14 @ 5:30 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chinese Teaching Summer Seminar offered by Centre for Chinese Teacher Development at Concordia University of Edmonton is an intensive professional development summer course which is designed for teachers and researchers in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. It is also beneficial to people who are interested in Chinese character acquisition and teaching\, Chinese vocabulary acquisition and teaching\, Chinese teaching curricula and methodology\, as well as Chinese bilingual education\, Chinese language credentials and CIE support to Chinese language teaching and learning. \nThis two weeks seminar will take place at Concordia University of Edmonton’s beautiful riverside campus\, minutes away from the vibrant downtown city core. 9:00AM – 3:30PM\, Monday to Friday for a total of 50 instructional hours. \nCourse content: \n\nChinese vocabulary acquisition and teaching\, by Dr. Liang Tian\, July 4-6\nChinese character acquisition and teaching\, by Dr. Yanmin Liang\, July 7-11\nChinese teaching methodology\, Dr. Mianmian Xie\, July 12-13\nChinese bilingual education and Chinese language credentials\, Dr. Wei Li\, July 14\n\nAll sections will be delivered by a combination of lectures in the morning and workshops in the afternoon. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in and learn from the lectures and discussions in the morning regarding theory and best practices in Chinese characters teaching\, vocabulary teaching and various methodologies. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Edmonton’s Chinatown is the largest in area of any North American Chinatown? Did you know that Chinatown has a few different hearts? Come along for a walk to learn about Chinatown’s past\, present\, and future. We’ll touch on the history of Edmonton’s two Chinatowns\, current development pressures\, and visit a few of the businesses on and off 97th Street. \nThis free tour runs from 10:30am-12:30pm every second Sunday this summer on June 11\, July 9\, August 13\, and September 10.  \n\nMeet at the Edmonton Tourism Welcome Centre at 9990 Jasper Avenue. Look for guides wearing “I <3 Chinatown” t-shirts. \nThis is a volunteer-run tour\, for the love of Chinatown!

DESCRIPTION:Churchill Square will be the place to be June 9-11\, 2017 as we celebrate the second annual Edmonton Filipino Fiesta. Thank you for making last year’s event a resounding success. This year’s Fiesta promises to be even bigger and better! \nEdmonton is known as Festival City and well over 40\,000 people of Filipino descent call Edmonton home. Filipino Fiestas are meant to be celebrated with lots of family and friends so we look forward to sharing with everyone the culture and traditions of the Philippines! \n“Fiesta” means festival and they are a renowned tradition of the Philippines. These joyful and grand events are at the heart of Filipino culture. Held in almost every town and province across the country\, fiestas celebrate patron saints\, ethnic traditions and important milestones for the local people. They are also about thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and the blessings of a full life. \nFiesta activities always spill into the streets where people of all ages and walks of life take part in parades\, processions and other colorful merrymaking. The celebrations aren’t complete without a feast of food\, music and dancing! \nAdmission is free and everyone is welcome!

SUMMARY:Japanese Tea Ceremony - Asian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Sitting times for June 4\, 2017: 12:45 pm\, 1:30 pm\, and 2:15 pm. \nAdvance tickets recommended. \nExperience Japanese culture in a unique setting. Traditional tea offerings are hosted at the Ozawa Pavilion\, an authentic Japanese Tea House\, or in the adjacent Ikoi no ba (a “cozy place to gather”)\, both overlooking the tranquil Kurimoto Japanese Garden. Japanese sweets and tea are provided to guests\, as well as an explanation of the tea ceremony. \nTicket information\nThe tea ceremony is presented by the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association (Wind in the Pines Tea Association)\, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Japanese tea offering. Tickets are paid directly to the volunteer group (cash only at the door\, or online at the Matsukaze Chonoyu Association website in advance). The ticket price helps to offset the cost of imported tea and sweets. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Reconciliation in Solidarity Edmonton (RISE) and Metro Cinema’s 2nd\nAnnual Asian Canadian Film Series\, this screening will take place on Sunday May 28\, 2017\,\nlaunching Reconciliation Week (May 28-June 3) and concluding Asian Heritage Month (May).\nFollowing the film\, there will be a moderated Q & A with the filmmakers\, and a few local\nspeakers\, to connect the film’s themes to the Edmonton-Treaty 6 context. The panel will be\nmoderated by Edmonton’s Historian Laureate\, Chris Chang-Yen Phillips. Speakers will include:\nSarah Wai Yee Ling (the film’s producer)\, Alejandro Yoshizawa (Director\, Producer\, DoP\, and\nEditor)\, and one of the Grant siblings featured in the film. The panel will also include two localspeakers. \nChinese with English subtitles.
