SUMMARY:Tokyo Idols - Asian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:“IDOLS” has fast become a phenomenon in Japan as girl bands and pop music permeate Japanese life. This ever growing phenomenon is told through Rio\, a bona fide “Tokyo Idol” who takes us on her journey toward fame. Now meet her “brothers”: a group of adult middle-aged\, male\, super fans (ages 35 – 50) who devote their lives to following her—in the virtual world and in real life. Once considered to be on the fringes of society\, the “brothers” who gave up salaried jobs to pursue an interest in female idol culture have since blown up and have now become mainstream via the internet\, illuminating the growing disconnect between men and women in hypermodern societies. \nWith her provocative look into the Japanese pop music industry and its focus on traditional beauty ideals\, filmmaker Kyoko Miyake confronts the nature of gender power dynamics at work. As the female idols become younger and younger\, Miyake offers a critique on the veil of internet fame and the new terms of engagement that are now playing out IRL around the globe.

SUMMARY:Re-Orienting China Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:University of Alberta professor and writer Leilei Chen was born and raised in China\, but admits she’d always held an idealized vision of Canada. When a doctoral scholarship brought her to Edmonton\, that vision was shattered by Canada’s social problems and historical racism – even the weather didn’t measure up to her red-leafed dreams. Canadian realities made her consider her homeland and how the “seemingly antithetical” countries actually shared many similarities. She credits her travels for her “more nuanced and critical vision” of both countries. In Re-Orienting China\, Chen examines books by six contemporary travel writers on post-1949 China\, weighing in on their work and ways of understanding “otherness” with a critical eye\, particularly when she senses an us vs. them divide. \nInfo: Brenda Chan 780 970 5233 or brenda.chan@confuciusedmonton.ca

SUMMARY:Madeleine Thien
DESCRIPTION:Madeleine Thien\, winner of the 2016 Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the 2016 Scotiabank Giller Prize\, will appear at the Arden Theatre on March 29\, 2017 for a spring STARFest event presented by St. Albert Public Library. \nThien’s latest work\, Do Not Say We Have Nothing\, focuses on an extended family in China\, and the lives of two successive generations—those who lived through Mao’s Cultural Revolution and their children who became the students protesting in Tiananmen Square. At the center of this epic story are two young women\, Marie and Ai-Ming. Through their relationship Marie strives to piece together the tale of her fractured family in present-day Vancouver\, seeking answers in the fragile layers of their collective story. In addition to winning the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the Scotiabank Giller Prize\, the book was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. According to a Globe and Mail review Do Not Say We Have Nothing cements Madeleine Thien as one of Canada’s most talented novelists.
