SUMMARY:The Apology - Asian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Asian Canadian Film Series 2017 \n\nThis is the second presentation of the Asian Canadian film series at Metro Cinema\, featuring Canadian made films for Asian heritage month. This year’s films are recent releases by female filmmakers\, all of which are multi-faceted\, and multicultural. Curated by Alexis Kienlen. \nThe Apology is a powerful documentary about the personal journeys of three “comfort women” who were kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War 2.

SUMMARY:Tokyo Idols - Asian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:“IDOLS” has fast become a phenomenon in Japan as girl bands and pop music permeate Japanese life. This ever growing phenomenon is told through Rio\, a bona fide “Tokyo Idol” who takes us on her journey toward fame. Now meet her “brothers”: a group of adult middle-aged\, male\, super fans (ages 35 – 50) who devote their lives to following her—in the virtual world and in real life. Once considered to be on the fringes of society\, the “brothers” who gave up salaried jobs to pursue an interest in female idol culture have since blown up and have now become mainstream via the internet\, illuminating the growing disconnect between men and women in hypermodern societies. \nWith her provocative look into the Japanese pop music industry and its focus on traditional beauty ideals\, filmmaker Kyoko Miyake confronts the nature of gender power dynamics at work. As the female idols become younger and younger\, Miyake offers a critique on the veil of internet fame and the new terms of engagement that are now playing out IRL around the globe.

SUMMARY:Re-Orienting China Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:University of Alberta professor and writer Leilei Chen was born and raised in China\, but admits she’d always held an idealized vision of Canada. When a doctoral scholarship brought her to Edmonton\, that vision was shattered by Canada’s social problems and historical racism – even the weather didn’t measure up to her red-leafed dreams. Canadian realities made her consider her homeland and how the “seemingly antithetical” countries actually shared many similarities. She credits her travels for her “more nuanced and critical vision” of both countries. In Re-Orienting China\, Chen examines books by six contemporary travel writers on post-1949 China\, weighing in on their work and ways of understanding “otherness” with a critical eye\, particularly when she senses an us vs. them divide. \nInfo: Brenda Chan 780 970 5233 or brenda.chan@confuciusedmonton.ca

SUMMARY:Madeleine Thien
DESCRIPTION:Madeleine Thien\, winner of the 2016 Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the 2016 Scotiabank Giller Prize\, will appear at the Arden Theatre on March 29\, 2017 for a spring STARFest event presented by St. Albert Public Library. \nThien’s latest work\, Do Not Say We Have Nothing\, focuses on an extended family in China\, and the lives of two successive generations—those who lived through Mao’s Cultural Revolution and their children who became the students protesting in Tiananmen Square. At the center of this epic story are two young women\, Marie and Ai-Ming. Through their relationship Marie strives to piece together the tale of her fractured family in present-day Vancouver\, seeking answers in the fragile layers of their collective story. In addition to winning the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the Scotiabank Giller Prize\, the book was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. According to a Globe and Mail review Do Not Say We Have Nothing cements Madeleine Thien as one of Canada’s most talented novelists.

SUMMARY:International Print Exhibition: Canada and Japan
DESCRIPTION:The University of Alberta Museums in collaboration with SNAP and Edmonton print artist Liz Ingram are pleased to host the KYOTO Hanga 2016 exhibition – International Print Exhibition: Canada and Japan organized by Akira Kurosaki\, chairman of the Kyoto Print Exhibition Executive Committee. For its first time in Canada\, this exhibition will explore over 150 contemporary prints by Canadian and Japanese artists in a way that creates a compelling storyline of recent printmaking in both countries. Artists in this exhibition represent some of the best that Canada and the Kyoto/Kyushu region of western Japan has to offer and all of them have helped to build the strong reputations in printmaking held by both these countries.

The Alibaba Group’s mission is to make it easy to do business anywhere. It is the largest retail commerce company in the world\, in terms of gross merchandise volume. Founded in 1999\, the company provides the fundamental technology infrastructure and marketing reach to help merchants\, brands and other businesses leverage the power of the Internet to engage with users and customers. \nMr. Leung is an internet/ecommerce pioneer with almost two decades of experience in the sector\, ten years of it in senior Sales\, Marketing\, and Business Development positions.
