SUMMARY:The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Professor Christopher Rea\, UBC \nFriday October 14\, 2016\n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm\nTelus Centre Room 134\, UAlberta \nChina’s entry in modernity was not just traumatic\, but uproarious. As the Qing last dynasty fell\, prominent writers compiled jokes to form collections called “histories of laughter.” In the first years of the republic\, novelists\, essayists\, and illustrators used humorous allegories to make veiled critiques of the new government. Yet political and cultural discussion repeatedly erupted into invective\, with critics gleefully jeering rivals in public. Farceurs drew followings in the popular press\, promoting a culture of buffoonery. These expressions of hilarity proved so offensive to high-brow writers that they launched a campaign in the 1930s to displace old forms of mirth with a new one they called youmo (humor). What can we learn about history from those who laugh their way through it? Focusing on the case of China\, this talk will discuss how political turmoil\, new media\, and other forces nurtured cultures of humor in a modernizing society\, from the last days of empire to the digital age. \nOpen to all\, please RSVP here

DESCRIPTION:Homes is a novel based on the life of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah who\, along with millions of other refugees\, is forced to flee the brutal civil war raging in Syria as a teenager. Like many others living though war across the world today\, Abu Bakr experiences his share of horrific events\, but these are not what define him or his life. When he finally finds safety and a new home in Canada\, he finds a life full of possibilities\, but also loneliness and difficult new challenges. This is a story of how a young boy emerged from a war-zone with his easy laugh and gentle soul intact. \nA portion of the proceeds of this novel will go towards an educational endowment fund for the Al Rabeeah family\, to privately sponsor Uncle Mohammed’s family to Canada\, and for other Syrian Refugee charities.

In spite of events that may be taking place on the international stage\, local cultural associations have the foresight to look beyond sometimes centuries-old disagreements\, co-exist peacefully for three days in the idyllic setting of Edmonton’s River Valley\, and share with visitors\, and with each other\, those traditions that make their people unique. \nAdmission is FREE\, but a donation for Edmonton’s Food Bank would be appreciated. \nNote that there is no public parking in Hawrelak Park during the Festival.
