SUMMARY:Author Winnie Canuel "Homes" Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Homes is a novel based on the life of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah who\, along with millions of other refugees\, is forced to flee the brutal civil war raging in Syria as a teenager. Like many others living though war across the world today\, Abu Bakr experiences his share of horrific events\, but these are not what define him or his life. When he finally finds safety and a new home in Canada\, he finds a life full of possibilities\, but also loneliness and difficult new challenges. This is a story of how a young boy emerged from a war-zone with his easy laugh and gentle soul intact. \nA portion of the proceeds of this novel will go towards an educational endowment fund for the Al Rabeeah family\, to privately sponsor Uncle Mohammed’s family to Canada\, and for other Syrian Refugee charities.

SUMMARY:Edmonton Heritage Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Servus Heritage Festival is the place to be during the August long-weekend. Nestled in Edmonton’s scenic river valley\, bordered by lush ravines and the North Saskatchewan River\, the Festival draws visitors from around the Edmonton capital region and across the continent to spend some time sampling the tastes\, smells\, sights\, and sounds of a diverse array of cultures. \nApproximately 60 pavilions representing over eighty-five cultures from all over the world will be part of this incredible celebration. Sample culinary delicacies\, see creative performances\, shop for crafts\, artwork\, and clothing\, or chat with people eager to tell you a little about their cultural roots and their present-day communities in Canada. \nWe are proud to present a celebration of Canada’s renowned multicultural spirit in an atmosphere of tolerance. In spite of events that may be taking place on the international stage\, local cultural associations have the foresight to look beyond sometimes centuries-old disagreements\, co-exist peacefully for three days in the idyllic setting of Edmonton’s River Valley\, and share with visitors\, and with each other\, those traditions that make their people unique. \nAdmission is FREE\, but a donation for Edmonton’s Food Bank would be appreciated. \nNote that there is no public parking in Hawrelak Park during the Festival. Bikes welcome or take ETS. Please leave your dog at home. No dogs allowed.

SUMMARY:K - Days Parade
DESCRIPTION:Main Parade – Starts at 10 a.m.!\nIt’s a part of K-Days that’s as important as the fair itself—a tradition that has brought millions of smiles to children and adults alike over the past generations. Every year the K-Days Parade sets the 10-day event in motion with a sea of beautiful floats\, giant balloons\, amazing performers\, loveable mascots and real life animals. \nParade Marshals\nThis past May\, we witnessed one of the most dramatic evacuations in our nation’s history–forever cementing the relationship between Edmonton and Fort McMurray. Many watched as nearly 90\,000 residents of Fort McMurray evacuated their homes with only a moment’s notice. SUMMARY:Beyond the Imperial Clothing Instructions: Female Dresses in Early Qing China
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 16\, 2016\n11:30 – 12:30 pm \nLocation: University of Alberta Museums Galleries at Enterprise Square – Idea Lounge \nGuest Speaker: Prof. Chuan-hui Mau 毛傳慧 (National Tsing-hua University\, Taiwan) \nBeyond the Imperial Clothing Instructions: Female Dresses in Early Qing China \nRegister at \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBhqqV9JiRGfy29NyQ6giLFYdr6G4lm9jvCTv9bgkYzYVVjQ/viewform?c=0&w=1 \nAbstract \nImmediately after taking over China\, Emperor Shunzhi (r. 1643-1661) ordered the Han-Chinese male population to take part in the Manchu hairstyle tradition of shaving part of the head and keeping the remainder in a plait. In order to assure a peaceful reign\, however\, Han-Chinese women were allowed to keep their own traditional dress and hair styles. At the same time\, Manchu women were prohibited from dressing like their Han-Chinese counterparts. \nIn 1646\, the Emperor issued the imperial clothing instructions regulating the forms\, colours\, materials and decorative patterns according to the social hierarchy\, from the emperor\, members of the imperial clan\, nobles\, and mandarins down to commoners. A woman had to follow the rank either of her father or of her husband\, and for a widow\, that of her son. During the reigns of Kangxi (1662-1722)\, Yongzheng (1723-1735)\, and Qianlong (1736-1795)\, the clothing instructions were modified\, but the rules for women\, both Manchu and Han-Chinese\, were maintained to keep their ethnic customs and identities. \nThe clothing instructions seem monotonous\, but literary descriptions\, paintings\, particularly textile collections reveal about the rich colours\, motifs\, materials and forms of women’s “fashions.” How did these women succeed in creating their fashions in spite of imperial rules? What were the circumstances for the evolution of clothing tastes? These are the questions to be discussed in this presentation. \nBiography \nChuan-hui Mau is associate professor at the Institute of History\, National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan\, and an associate member of the laboratory Identités-Cultures-Territoires (ICT\, EA 337)\, and University Paris Diderot – Paris 7. Her academic interest focuses on history of exchanges between China and Europe.

SUMMARY:Edmonton's First Filipino Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to Sir Winston Churchill Square on June 11 and 12\, 2016 to celebrate Edmonton’s first Filipino Fiesta! \n“Fiesta” means festival and they are a renowned tradition of the Philippines. Held in almost every town and province in honour of each locale’s patron saint\, these joyful and grand celebrations are at the heart of Filipino culture. The fiesta is also about thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest\, the blessings of a full life\, an observance of local rituals\, and a commemoration of local milestones or significant events. \nTypically\, fiesta activities are held in churches\, town plazas or town squares\, and homes but often spill into the streets where people of all ages and walks of life take part in parades\, processions\, and other colourful activities. The celebrations always involve a feast of food and\, of course\, a lot of music and dancing! \n“Edmonton is known as Festival City and well over 40\,000 people of Filipino descent call Edmonton home so it seemed a natural fit that we finally celebrate a fiesta here\,” said Tony Santiago\, one of the event organizers. “We are excited to host this fiesta and look forward to sharing our culture and traditions with everyone!” \nEdmonton Filipino Fiesta\nJune 11 and 12\, 2016\nChurchill Square\, Edmonton\nFree admission.
