SUMMARY:Beyond the Imperial Clothing Instructions: Female Dresses in Early Qing China
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 16\, 2016\n11:30 – 12:30 pm \nLocation: University of Alberta Museums Galleries at Enterprise Square – Idea Lounge \nGuest Speaker: Prof. Chuan-hui Mau 毛傳慧 (National Tsing-hua University\, Taiwan) \nBeyond the Imperial Clothing Instructions: Female Dresses in Early Qing China \nRegister at \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBhqqV9JiRGfy29NyQ6giLFYdr6G4lm9jvCTv9bgkYzYVVjQ/viewform?c=0&w=1 \nAbstract \nImmediately after taking over China\, Emperor Shunzhi (r. 1643-1661) ordered the Han-Chinese male population to take part in the Manchu hairstyle tradition of shaving part of the head and keeping the remainder in a plait. In order to assure a peaceful reign\, however\, Han-Chinese women were allowed to keep their own traditional dress and hair styles. At the same time\, Manchu women were prohibited from dressing like their Han-Chinese counterparts. \nIn 1646\, the Emperor issued the imperial clothing instructions regulating the forms\, colours\, materials and decorative patterns according to the social hierarchy\, from the emperor\, members of the imperial clan\, nobles\, and mandarins down to commoners. A woman had to follow the rank either of her father or of her husband\, and for a widow\, that of her son. During the reigns of Kangxi (1662-1722)\, Yongzheng (1723-1735)\, and Qianlong (1736-1795)\, the clothing instructions were modified\, but the rules for women\, both Manchu and Han-Chinese\, were maintained to keep their ethnic customs and identities. \nThe clothing instructions seem monotonous\, but literary descriptions\, paintings\, particularly textile collections reveal about the rich colours\, motifs\, materials and forms of women’s “fashions.” How did these women succeed in creating their fashions in spite of imperial rules? What were the circumstances for the evolution of clothing tastes? These are the questions to be discussed in this presentation. \nBiography \nChuan-hui Mau is associate professor at the Institute of History\, National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan\, and an associate member of the laboratory Identités-Cultures-Territoires (ICT\, EA 337)\, and University Paris Diderot – Paris 7. Her academic interest focuses on history of exchanges between China and Europe.

SUMMARY:Edmonton's First Filipino Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to Sir Winston Churchill Square on June 11 and 12\, 2016 to celebrate Edmonton’s first Filipino Fiesta! \n“Fiesta” means festival and they are a renowned tradition of the Philippines. Held in almost every town and province in honour of each locale’s patron saint\, these joyful and grand celebrations are at the heart of Filipino culture. The fiesta is also about thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest\, the blessings of a full life\, an observance of local rituals\, and a commemoration of local milestones or significant events. \nTypically\, fiesta activities are held in churches\, town plazas or town squares\, and homes but often spill into the streets where people of all ages and walks of life take part in parades\, processions\, and other colourful activities. The celebrations always involve a feast of food and\, of course\, a lot of music and dancing! \n“Edmonton is known as Festival City and well over 40\,000 people of Filipino descent call Edmonton home so it seemed a natural fit that we finally celebrate a fiesta here\,” said Tony Santiago\, one of the event organizers. “We are excited to host this fiesta and look forward to sharing our culture and traditions with everyone!” \nEdmonton Filipino Fiesta\nJune 11 and 12\, 2016\nChurchill Square\, Edmonton\nFree admission. SUMMARY:Double Happiness - Metro Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Asian Canadian Film Series\nCurated by Alexis Kienlen \nMay is Asian heritage month and I am delighted to be the curator of Metro Cinema’s first Asian Canadian film series. In a time when we are talking the whitewashing of Hollywood\, and #Oscarssowhite\, it is even more important to showcase Asian Canadian films and Asian-Canadian stories. As a person of mixed Asian descent\, I grew up seeing very little of my extended family’s culture or history reflected on screen. It is my hope that this film series will introduce you to homegrown talent\, educate you\, make you laugh\, scare you\, and encourage you to talk about Asian Canadian history and identity. Special thanks to: Mari Sasano\, Suzette Chan\, Kathryn Lennon\, Erin Fraser and Nathan Smith. \n  \nDouble Happiness \nJade Li (Sandra Oh)\, a young Chinese-Canadian\, wants to become an actress without upsetting her extremely traditional parents.

SUMMARY:Human Harvest
DESCRIPTION:When reports first emerged from China in 2006 that state-run hospitals were killing prisoners of conscience to sell their organs\, it seemed too horrible to believe. But as researchers around the world–including human rights lawyer David Matas and former Canadian Member of Parliament David Kilgour–began to uncover the mystery\, the true picture became all too clear. Their evidence suggests that tens of thousands of innocent people have been killed on demand to supply an ongoing illegal organ transplant industry. The story of how these two Nobel Peace Prize nominees pieced together the evidence and continue to fight against this industrial-scale crime against humanity is a riveting tale of both personal triumphs and unimaginable horror. \nFilm & Panel Discussion \nSpecial Guests: David Kilgour\, Former Edmonton MP\, Nobel Peace Prize Nominee \nCharl Els\, MD\, Associate Clinical Professor\, Advisory Board DAFOH (Nominee: 2016 Nobel Peace Prize)

Incidentally the destination of the choir’s summer exchange is the tofu production base\, shifting the trip into an investigative journey. During excursion on the last day\, they get lost in the rural hills and have to face hunger\, fear and possible death. Only by accident do they find out Kathy’s pack of crayons can be burned as candles\, their last hope. But as the crayon sticks dwindle away into the night\, it becomes clear that if all were to survive\, one of them has to make a sacrifice before the last crayon is out… \nThe movie is in Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/thelastcrayon/?fref=ts \nTickets: & Info: 780 909 2928 or paulc@diversusmg.com \n
