SUMMARY:Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival promotes Dragon Boat racing for fun\, sport and recreation. The festival showcases Asian and multiculturalism in the city of Edmonton. Grab your spot in a boat or come cheer the particpants on as they rip down the mighty North Saskatchewan River. \nDuring the three day festival that takes place in Edmonton every August\, the pulsation from drum beats can be heard throughout Edmonton’s dowtown core. Each dragon boat is led by a drummer who produces a rythmic drum beat\, or the boats “heartbeat”\, which keeps the paddlers in sync as they battle neck-and-neck with their rivals down the river. Teams take great pride in wearing their team’s colours and decorating their dragon boats to intimidate the competiton. Pick your favourite team early and cheer them on right to the finish.

SUMMARY:Animethon 22
DESCRIPTION:Animethon 22\n\n\n\nStarts:\nSaturday\, August 08\n9:00 AM\nEnds:\nSunday\, August 09\n1:30 AM\n\n\n\n  \nAnimethon is a Japanese Animation (“anime”) themed festival held annually in the city of Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada. We have expanded our focus beyond screening anime and now also include voice actor guests from North America\, musical acts from North America and Japan\, improvisation groups\, as well as various related activities such as gaming\, costume contests\, and more. Animethon\, as of 2004\, is operated by the Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts (ASAPA). \nAnimethon started back in 1994 by the Banzai Anime Klub of Alberta (BAKA)\, with the intent of promoting Japanese anime. It became a success by presenting well-known and more obscure anime to audiences\, and has since grown to what it is now. Today\, Animethon is presented by the not-for-profit Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts (ASAPA). \nIn the beginning\, Animethon was a one-day event that allowed people to view different Japanese Anime movies and television shows within two classrooms at Grant MacEwan. Since Animethon 2\, the festival has grown to utilize the entirety of the University campus for events\, artist alley\, education panels\, and a large vendor hall. As such\, the steady increase of numbers in attendees to Animethon has allowed for various vendors to expose themselves to a unique group of people both young and old. \nA Taste of Animethon was first created in 2010. While nowhere near the size of Animethon itself it’s been a successful event in its own right with a steadily growing attendance. In 2013 we moved venues to the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre. In 2016 we are moving to the Shaw Conference Centre so we can enjoy a larger venue!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Why Grow Here by Kathryn Chase Merrett
DESCRIPTION:Edmonton author Kathryn Chase Merrett will be the Edmonton Horticultural Society featured speaker on Monday\, July 27\, 2015 \nEdmonton has a rich and diverse horticultural history. Vacant lot gardeners\, rose gardeners\, and horticultural societies have all contributed to the beautification of the capital city of Alberta\, and through the enthusiasm of florists\, seedsmen\, and plant breeders the city has developed a distinct horticultural character. In this collection of nine essays\, each with a different theme\, Kathryn Chase Merrett depicts the development of Edmonton’s social\, cultural\, and physical landscape as it has been shaped by champions of both nature and the garden. Edmontonians and all urbanites interested in gardening and local history\, as well as professors and students of history\, cultural studies\, and urban design\, will delight in the colourful storytelling of Why Grow Here. \nHer book includes historical essays on the first Chinese market gardeners in Edmonton. \nFree Parking
