The theme of the evening is “FDI 101: Engaging Asia for Prosperity.” \nGordon Houlden is the Director of the China Institute and a Professor of Political Science at the University of Alberta. Mei Huang is a Senior Policy Advisor in the International Energy Policy Branch at Alberta Energy. Following some remarks by Gordon Houlden\, Mei Huang will sit down with Gordon Houlden in a 1 on 1 interview to discuss his perspectives on the fundamentals of Foreign Direct Investment\, Canada’s approach to investment with respect to Asia as well as whether a targeted Asia Strategy is needed for the country. SUMMARY:Up Late with George Gao\, erhu
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as one of the most exciting\, innovative and respected erhu masters today\, the Gemini Award-nominated George Gao began studying the erhu at the age of six. The recipient of several awards as a young student\, he continued his studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Royal Conservatory in Music in Toronto. After winning First Prize in the Beijing National Erhu Competition\, he embarked on an international performing career with tours to North America\, Europe and Asia. \nAn enthusiast of many musical styles\, George organized the Beijing rock group Red Maple Leaf\, and the pop group Snowman. He has performed with many world music artists including Jesse Cook\, Donald Quan\, Ron Korb\, and ensembles such as Bowfire\, Silk Orchestra\, the George Gao Ensemble\, and Memento. He has pioneered the development of new music for the erhu\, fusing traditional Chinese music with jazz\, western Classical music\, New Age\, and ethnic music from diverse cultures. \nGeorge Gao is also much in demand as a session player and is featured on the soundtrack for the popular science fiction television program\, Earth: Final Conflict. He has also written music for several films. In 2003 he collaborated with composer Brian Keane on the score for the award-winning PBS documentary Becoming American\, the Chinese Experience. He co-composed and recorded music for two notable short documentary films\, The Blood of Yingzhou District\, awarded an Oscar in 2006\, and The Warriors of Qiugang\, nominated for an Oscar in 2011. \nGeorge Gao is currently a professor in residence at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art and a guest professor at several conservatories of music in China\, Taiwan and Japan. DESCRIPTION:Edmonton’s Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Program is the largest of its kind outside of China with over 30 years of experience. \nThis program is a partial immersion program\, from Kindergarten to Grade 12\, where in elementary school 50% of the curriculum is taught in Chinese and 50% in English. Students are taught the same curriculum as others in the same grade level. \nThe goal of the Chinese Bilingual Program is to have students become functionally fluent in Chinese as well as in English and to develop an appreciation of the language and culture of Chinese-speaking countries. DESCRIPTION:The Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association (ECBEA) was the first organization to offer awards to students in Edmonton’s Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Program to encourage students to continue learning Chinese language\, Chinese culture and contribute to the community but most importantly\, to share what they learn with the broader multicultural and intergenerational community. \nNearly 2000 students\, in the Chinese Bilingual Program\, study Mandarin during regular public school hours in 5 elementary\, 4 junior high and 3 senior high schools. \nThe ECBEA Awards & Scholarship Committee is working to expand our offerings of even more innovative and imaginative scholarships to benefit students in the Chinese Bilingual Program. \n

SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Chopsticks - An Edmonton Chinatown Food Crawl
DESCRIPTION:The first YEG Food Crawl event (presented by the McCauley Revitalization) in which we are going to bring participants in a staggered eating process in one night by having one course of a meal at each of the four locations (restaurants) and finishing at a place for bubble tea.
