DESCRIPTION:Edmonton’s Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Program is the largest of its kind outside of China with over 30 years of experience. \nThis program is a partial immersion program\, from Kindergarten to Grade 12\, where in elementary school 50% of the curriculum is taught in Chinese and 50% in English. SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Chopsticks - An Edmonton Chinatown Food Crawl
DESCRIPTION:The first YEG Food Crawl event (presented by the McCauley Revitalization) in which we are going to bring participants in a staggered eating process in one night by having one course of a meal at each of the four locations (restaurants) and finishing at a place for bubble tea. SUMMARY:Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The month of May is recognized as Asian Heritage Month. \nIn Vietnam\, the oldest record mentioning water puppetry is the inscription on a stone stele dating from 1121. The stele called Sùng Thiện Diên Linh is located in Đọi Sơn Pagoda\, Duy Tiên District\, Hà Nam Province\, about 50 km from Hanoi.It describes a scene: “A golden tortoise with three mountains on its shell was seen on the rippling surface of the water. It showed both its carapace and four legs… the carven’s entrance opened and fairies in the play appeared…Flocks of precious birds and herds of animals sang and danced…”. \nActually\, no written document with accurate details on this original performing art has been found. In water puppetry villages\, the troupes and puppeteers worship different founders who sometimes have no names or specific identities. Interestingly\, it is these secrets that have made this art more attractive to audiences\, performers and researchers.

It assesses young students’ abilities to use Chinese in their daily and academic lives. \nHSK is an international standardized exam that tests and rates Chinese language proficiency. It assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily\, academic and professional lives. \nEdmonton has the largest Chinese Bilingual Program of its kind outside of China. Nearly 2000 public school students are learning Chinese on a daily basis.

SUMMARY:Nepal Earthquake Relief Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:One of the poorest countries in the world\, Nepal was hit with the worst earthquake in recent memory. The world news media have reported the death count as being over 7\,200 people and this number is expected to climb. The United Nations estimated that over 8.1 million of the country’s 31 million people\, or over 25% of the population have been affected by this earthquake. \nThe Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association (ECBEA) is fundraising to assist the people of Nepal. Japanese Children’s Day\nTime: 11AM – 3PM \nIn Japan\, children have their own national holiday in early May – Kodomo No Hi\, or Children’s Day. Families fly colourful carp-shaped streamers (koinobori)\, display special dolls and ornaments and celebrate children on this festive day. Come see giant koinobori flying in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden\, make your own carp streamer and other Japanese crafts to take home with you\, and listen to Japanese folktales. Enjoy the early spring Garden and be sure to visit the butterflies in our Tropical Showhouse. \nOther activities include traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and guided walking tours of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden. \nChildren’s Day activities are included with general admission. Extra charge for Tea Ceremonies.\nFree admission for Garden Seasons Pass holders and Friends of the Garden members. \n  \n2. Japanese Tea Ceremony\nExperience Japanese culture in a unique setting. Traditional tea offerings are hosted at the Ozawa Pavilion\, an authentic Japanese Tea House set in the tranquil Kurimoto Japanese Garden. Japanese sweets and tea are provided to guests\, as well as an explanation of the tearoom and tea ceremony. \nThe tea ceremony is presented by the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association (Wind in the Pines Tea Association)\, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Japanese tea offering. Tickets are $7.50 for a seated indoor tea ceremony\, and are paid directly to the volunteer group (cash only). The ticket price helps to offset the cost of imported tea and sweets. \nFree guided tours of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden will also be offered at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm – a wonderful opportunity to learn about the fascinating history and symbolism behind this special garden. \nSitting times for May 3\, 2015: \n10:30 am – Ro Ceremony (performed in small tea room) Max. 5 participants \n11:15 am – Ro Ceremony Max. 5 participants \n12:45 pm – Furo Ceremony (performed in the large tatami room\, with most guests seated on chairs in the adjoining vestibule).
