SUMMARY:A Taste of Animethon 2015
DESCRIPTION:Animethon started back in 1994 by the Banzai Anime Klub of Alberta (BAKA)\, with the intent of promoting Japanese anime. It became a success by presenting well-known and more obscure anime to audiences\, and has since grown to what it is now. Today\, Animethon is presented by the not-for-profit Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts (ASAPA). \nA Taste of Animethon was first created in 2010. While nowhere near the size of Animethon itself it’s been a successful event in its own right with a steadily growing attendance. In 2013 we moved venues to the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre. We hope that you’ll join us to make this year’s event just as successful!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Italian With a Twist by Sonny Sung
DESCRIPTION:Copies of his new Italian with a Twist\, published by Company’s Coming\, are available at Bistecca right now as well as at select Chapters and Indigo bookstores\, and at other Sorrentino’s locations after the official launch Feb. 8. Sung says he has tried to create dishes that can be replicated at home\, but still offer special\, gourmet touches designed to impress. The book contains 75 of his best recipes\, many of them signature dishes that patrons have come to cherish\, such as the Bison Cannelloni\, the Linguine Fruiti di Mare and the Chicken Penne Arrabbiata. \nAbout two years in the making\, the recipe book showcases the styles of cooking found in the traditions Sung most appreciates — Italian and French. Before coming to Sorrentino’s 14 years ago\, Sung was co-owner of one of Edmonton’s early fine-dining French restaurants\, Claude’s. Born in Taiwan and raised in Japan\, Sung also trained in Italy and France after graduating from the New York campus of the Culinary Institute of America. He hopes to open a restaurant in the south of France one day.

SUMMARY:Speaking With Second Nature
DESCRIPTION:Artpic Artist: Yong Fei Guan \nSpread throughout the Milner library like brilliant eggs\, Yong Fei Guan’s personable watercolours are all about nature and pets\, which of course are really the same thing. Eight years ago\, she left the Chinese city of Foshan\, where “people thought art was useless when I was growing up.” But studying at the Emily Carr art and design school in Vancouver\, she developed a new respect for water\, including in her work. \nShe talks first about pets\, then water. “Pets are from nature. When people bring nature into their home\, nature becomes second nature because it is manipulated by human will. They are good subjects to me because I learn not only their animal traits but also about human characteristics. Some people may want to own a piece of nature at home to remind them of their fundamental roots. \n“I used to hate watercolour. I found it very difficult to control water on paper and it seemed to go everywhere. I changed my attitude to watercolour when I studied in Vancouver. During that time\, one of my professors\, Rita Wong at Emily Carr\, introduced me to ideas about environmental ethics. She wrote poems about water and often invited her class to walk around Granville Island with her. Once at the edge of the shore\, she squatted and cupped a handful of sea water in her palm and stared at it for a while. I was moved by her gentle gesture. Through her action I found the beauty and fundamental aspect of water\, which I had previously taken for granted.” \nExcerpt from Edmonton Journal
