SUMMARY:Komagata Maru: an/other journey
DESCRIPTION:This coming week marks the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident: \nOn May 23\, 1914\, the Komagata Maru sailed into Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet\, carrying 376 passengers of Indian origin. However\, the passengers on board the Japanese steamer were denied permission to enter Canada. Fears over Asian immigration at the time led the Canadian government to adopt a series of racist exclusionary policies against Chinese\, Japanese and Indian migrants. \nKomagata Maru Week opens with an exhibition of historical images and artworks by Gloria Ho and Jag Raina. \nExhibition includes charcoals by Jag Raina\, and watercolour portraits by Gloria Ho. \n“My collection of portraits is intended to honour the Komagata Maru incident from the perspective of the individuals arriving to Canada rather than from the perspective of those who rejected them.” \nGloria Ho is a freelance illustrator based in Edmonton\, Alberta.

SUMMARY:BEYOND THE CLOUD: YONAOSHI 3.11
DESCRIPTION:Presented in cooperation with University of Alberta\, Department of East Asian Studies \nFukushima is a parallel world. From the outside\, everything seems normal. Away from the forbidden zone\, life goes on exactly as before. The danger now is invisible. Some say that all is fine\, all is under control. But today\, nothing is resolved. Overwhelmed by the events of 11 March 2011\, director Keiko Courdy left immediately for Japan. She spent more than a year and a half talking to people in Fukushima. \nTheir compelling testimonies highlight the contradictions and movements in a society that is recovering from massive trauma.

SUMMARY:HIKIKOMORI\, A DEAFENING SILENCE
DESCRIPTION:Part of Global Visions Film Festival \nPresented by University of Alberta\, Department of East Asian Studies \nThere are between 600 thousand and a million Japanese youths who stay hidden away in their bedroom\, sometimes cut off from all kind of social interaction for several years. \nThese youths\, named hikikomori\, are renounced in Japanese society as being the ‘lost generation’. This film meets some of them in a rare center set up to help them re-socialize\, and tries to understand the reasoning.
