SUMMARY:Eating Bitterness: The Canadian Journey from Exclusion to Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:The title\, Eating Bitterness\, (吃苦 – chi ku) refers to a Chinese proverb on how the endurance of hardship can bring great strength. Many Chinese Canadians had to endure bitter circumstances posed by racial discrimination and public policy that denied them many civil liberties and equal rights. The exhibition highlights the resilience of Chinese Canadian individuals and communities under difficult circumstances\, whose stories are often omitted from the major canon of Canadian history. \nAnd we extend an invitation for all Canadians to ask ourselves\, what would Canada be without me and my family?\n\nBorealis Gallery\n\n\nSeptember 28\, 2024 – January 4\, 2025\n\nBorealis Gallery \nVisitor Centre\, Legislative Assembly of Alberta \n9820 107 St NW\, Edmonton\, AB T5K 1E4 \nWed – Sun 11:00am – 3:00pm

SUMMARY:What We Carry 唐人街 - Curated by Jordon Hon 韓寶軒 and Shawn Tse 謝兆龍
DESCRIPTION:How does art play a role in the evolution of our cultural spaces? \nWe often think of Chinatowns as places to preserve and honour the past. But how do we embrace evolution while fostering decolonization\, inclusion\, and community ownership? We don’t have clear answers for the future of Chinatown\, but our work in the community is driven by knowing how interconnected Chinatown is with major issues we face as a society. \nThese works inspired by Edmonton’s Chinatown carry stories of intergenerational relationships\, healing\, and deep community bonds greater than we can put into words. We hope this art will inspire critical reflections of our cultural spaces and continue to expand our imaginations for what Chinatown can be.

SUMMARY:Chinese Societies: A Home Away From Home
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Alberta premiere of\n\n\nThe Paper Trail: The Highlights Tour\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nfollowed by a special panel discussion\n\n\nChinese Societies\n\n\nA HOME AWAY FROM HOMEfrom the time of exclusion until now\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 is a tragic yet largely forgotten chapter of Canadian history\, profoundly impacting the lives of Chinese across Canada for nearly a quarter century. The only law in Canadian history to deny entry to Canada on the basis of race\, this Act separated families and resulted in lasting generational trauma in the Chinese Canadian community\, including those in Edmonton. \n \nJoin us for a free screening and the Alberta premiere of The Paper Trail: The Highlights Tour. The film documents the Chinese Canadian Museum’s feature exhibition in Vancouver\, BC. Following the film\, we will host a special panel discussion on the role of Chinese Societies during the time of exclusion with Sue Mah\, Sarah Ling\, and Larry Chin. As part of the fabric of Chinese communities since early settlement\, Chinese Societies have played an integral role both during and after the Exclusion Act era.  \n \nLearn about the evolving purpose of Chinese Societies and more! \n \nSaturday\, June 8\, 2024\n2:00pm to 3:30pm\nMah Society of Edmonton\n9643 101A Avenue\, NW\, Edmonton\n\n\nReserve Your Seat\nhttps://journeyofthehorseyeg.wixsite.com/home/special-project/film
