Chinese Societies
A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
from the time of exclusion until now
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 is a tragic yet largely forgotten chapter of Canadian history, profoundly impacting the lives of Chinese across Canada for nearly a quarter century. The only law in Canadian history to deny entry to Canada on the basis of race, this Act separated families and resulted in lasting generational trauma in the Chinese Canadian community, including those in Edmonton.
Join us for a free screening and the Alberta premiere of The Paper Trail: The Highlights Tour. The film documents the Chinese Canadian Museum’s feature exhibition in Vancouver, BC. Following the film, we will host a special panel discussion on the role of Chinese Societies during the time of exclusion with Sue Mah, Sarah Ling, and Larry Chin. As part of the fabric of Chinese communities since early settlement, Chinese Societies have played an integral role both during and after the Exclusion Act era.
